Herod Plays Kraftwerk: Brazilian band releases tribute album to the Germans.

Kraftwerk’s life and work are essential pillars in the history of electronic music, rock and pop culture. Precisely because of their wide influence, the Germans are considered a mark of modernity and futurism even today – although it has been almost 50 years since their first album, Kraftwerk, released in 1970. Crossing time, geography and styles, 2017 proves that this legacy continues to inspire generations, with the release of Herod Plays Kraftwerk, tribute album produced by Herod, São Paulo’s post-rock band.

A synthesis of the stages between Autobahn (1974) and The Man Machine (1978), this seven-track compilation not only honours Kraftwerk, but also serves as a test for Herod’s experimentalism, while recreating the language of synthesisers, keyboards and electronic drums for guitar, bass and drums. Gathered in the recording studio for more than a year until the album was done, it took them months for testing effects and measuring essences: noise, drone metal, post-rock, indie, and kraut-rock. A bulk of compression and dissonance gives an extra density to the interpretations, which were further enhanced by guitar and voice effects. “The Hall of Mirrors” uses a citar to recreate synth lines, bringing a quite peculiar eccentricity to the version.

Tested live a few times in 2016, the album’s repertoire works for both careful headphone auditioning and on-stage performances. An exercise in creativity, Herod Plays Kraftwerk is a piece beyond the time / space of each of the bands and carries enough to please the audience of both.

Vida e obra do Kraftwerk constituem pilares essenciais na história da música eletrônica, do rock e da cultura pop. Justamente pela influência ampla, os alemães são cotados como marco da modernidade e do futurismo até hoje -- mesmo que lá se vão quase 50 anos desde o primeiro álbum, Kraftwerk, lançado em 1970. Atravessando o tempo, a geografia e os estilos, 2017 deixa claro que este legado continua a inspirar com o lançamento de Herod Plays Kraftwerk, álbum-tributo produzido pela Herod, banda paulistana de post-rock.

Uma síntese das fases entre Autobahn (1974) e The Man Machine (1978), este compilado de sete faixas não apenas homenageia Kraftwerk como serve também de prova para o experimentalismo da Herod, que recriou para guitarra, baixo e bateria a linguagem dos sintetizadores, teclados e bateria eletrônica. Reunidos em estúdio por mais de um ano até terminar o álbum, foram horas testando efeitos e medindo essências: noise, drone metal, post-rock, indie, krautrock. Gravado na época que a Herod contava com três guitarras, a parede de compressão e dissonância deu uma densidade extra às interpretações, que ainda foram acrescidas de efeitos de guitarra e voz. "The Hall of Mirrors" utiliza cítara para recriar uma das linhas do sintetizador dando excentricidade bem peculiar à versão.

Testado ao vivo algumas vezes em 2016, o repertório do álbum funciona tanto para uma audição de fones cuidadosa quanto para as apresentações no palco. Um exercício de criatividade, Herod Plays Kraftwerk é uma peça além do tempo/espaço de cada uma das bandas e carrega o suficiente para agradar o público de ambas.

Herod é Daniel Ribeiro (guitarra), Sacha Ferreira (guitarra), Elson Barbosa (baixo) e Bruno Duarte (bateria).

Herod Plays Kraftwerk chega às plataformas digitais no dia primeiro de setembro. Por questões autorais, o álbum não ficará disponível para download.
